Five illegal guns seized in separate security operations on Wednesday
Five illegal weapons were seized, one man shot dead and others taken into custody in separate incidents across three parishes on Wednesday, the police have reported.
On Wednesday at about 5:00 a.m., police on operation in Ten Miles, Bull Bay, St Thomas seized a Piertro Berretta .380 pistol and eight .380 rounds of ammunition during a search at a premises.
Ricardo Francis, a 42-year-old mechanic of Jacksvale, Gypsum Road in the parish, was arrested in connection with the seizure. He is scheduled to appear in the Corporate Area Gun Court on Thursday, October 25.
About 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, during a joint police/military operation, members of the security forces who are working in the state of emergency in the corporate Area, searched an unoccupied house and found a Glock pistol with a magazine containing five rounds of ammunition, which were hidden in a clothes basket.
No arrest was made for that find.
Later that morning, the Spanish Town police seized a 9mm pistol with two rounds of ammunition following a confrontation with an alleged gunman on the Ackles Hill main road in Kitson Town, St Catherine.
The man, who was shot dead in the incident, has been identified as 35-year-old Garth Thomas.
The Inspectorate of Constabulary (IOC) and the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) are both investigating the incident.
The fifth seizure occurred at about 5:30 p.m. when another operation yielded success, with 27-year-old Ricardo Linton being accosted at Big Lane in Central Village, St Catherine, and an illegal gun reportedly taken from him.
