Firefighter dies in McCook's Pen car crash on New Year's Day

A firefighter died of injuries he sustained in a car crash along the McCook's Pen main road in St Catherine on Wednesday night.

The deceased man has been identified as 34-year-old Sheldon Henry of St John's Road, St Catherine. He was assigned to the Old Harbour Fire Station in the parish. The Jamaica Fire Brigade has been offering counselling to his colleagues there.

Reports are that about 11.30 pm, Henry had left work and was driving his car on the McCook's Pen main road heading towards Spanish Town, when he overtook a line of traffic. His vehicle then reportedly collided with at least two other vehicles.

He was pronounced dead at hospital.

It was the first fatal crash reported in 2020.

Meanwhile, Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie in a statement expressed his condolences to the colleagues, family and friends of Henry.

Henry joined the Jamaica Fire Brigade in 2012.
