Fire near Garvey Maceo High forces early closure

Students and staff of the Garvey Maceo High School in Clarendon were forced to leave the institution early on Tuesday as the effects of a nearby fire caused discomfort, in particular to students with asthma and other respiratory problems.

Loop News understands that smoke from an old sugar estate in close proximity to the school forced its closure as some staff members and more than 50 students were affected.

They were reportedly taken to the hospital as a precaution after some complained of a burning sensation in their eyes.
