Police are keeping a close watch on sections of Standpipe and surrounding communities in St Andrew after residents staged a fiery protest Monday night following the fatal shooting of a man allegedly by law enforcement officers.

Details surrounding the incident that led to the fatal shooting of the man are unclear and police, when contacted by Loop News, declined to give details.

However, Standpipe residents allege that about 7:45 Monday night, a team of officers went to Confidence Lane in the community and, shortly after, explosions were heard.

Residents said they went to investigate and saw police placing a male community member, suffering from gunshot wounds, inside a vehicle.

Protest near US Embassy

The community members then reportedly attacked members of the police team, removed the injured man from the vehicle and rushed him to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Residents in response to the news staged a massive protest along sections of Old Hope Road across the road from the US Embassy and close to the Chest Hospital.

Police have since increased their presence in the area and have also removed the road blocks.

Residents told Loop News that they plan to continue their protest on Tuesday.
