Explosion rocks Portland community; teachers injured

Two teachers from a school in Portland were injured and scores of children left traumatised after an explosion involving a container on Thursday.

Reports are that about 11:30 a.m., persons in the Kensington community in the parish heard a loud commotion in the area and went to investigate. It was discovered that a 40-foot container that was being used to store plantains and bananas, had exploded.

Police said two teachers who were at a nearby school with a group of students were injured by flying debris.

None of the children were physically injured.

A section of a church that is located close to where the incident took place was also damaged, and two vehicles and parts of a three-bedroom house located on the same property were extensively damaged.

The cause of the explosion was still not clear up to press time.
