'Empire' star Jussie Smollett is recovering in a Chicago hospital, following what is being described as a homophobic and racially motivated attack early Tuesday morning.

Reports are that two men approached Smollett and gained his attention by yelling racial and homophobic slurs at him. The attackers then assaulted the actor and poured an "unknown substance" on him.

One of the offenders also wrapped a rope around Smollett's neck during the attack.

They later fled the scene and Smollett transported himself to Northwestern Hospital where he is said to be in good condition.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime. Detectives are currently working to gather video, identify potential witnesses and establish an investigative timeline," said Chicago Police Department Chief Spokesman Anthony Gugliemi said in a statement.
