Emmanuel Apostolic provides over $1m in scholarships, school supplies
It was a day of love, empowerment and community as the Emmanuel Apostolic Church in Portmore last Saturday issued over $1.5 million in scholarships and school supplies at the church’s annual free back-to-school drive and empowerment day which residents from Portmore as well as other parts of St. Catherine and Kingston in attendance.
The back-to-school drive held under the theme ‘“Touching our Community with Love” saw over 1,000 parents and children coming out in their numbers from as early as 9am to benefit from not only the goodies but also free dental and medical checks throughout the day.
According to Youth Chairman, Nicolas Matthews, there was something for everyone “We distributed over 600 packages of school supplies including bag packs, stationary, textbooks, scientific calculators and geometry sets. We also issued over 1,000 packages of snacks and breakfast supplies. We granted 23 tuition scholarships and university grants totaling $600,000 including the inaugural, Bishop C Everton Thomas “Straight A’s and Occassional B” scholarship for $100,000.”
The dental and medical services was a new element this year with the dentists providing dental care to 125 students and the doctors seeing over 80 students throughout the day.

“This event is a crucial one on the church’s calendar as we feel it is vital that we touch our community with love especially in the back to school period which can be challenging for many parents,” Matthews said.
Also supporting the day’s events was State Minister in the Culture Ministry and Member of Parliament for East Central St Catherine, Alando Terrelonge who contributed a scholarship and back-to-school supplies. According to the M.P it was important for him to give back to the community because “Education is the best gift we can give our children.”
