Elderly man robbed of over $100,000 near Denham Town ZOSO
An 82-year-old man was attacked and robbed of over $100,000 in a brazen daylight attack along Spanish Town Road in Kingston on Tuesday.
The attack took place metres away from where the local authorities recently extended the boundaries of the Zone of Special Operations (ZOSO) that is now in effect in Denham Town, West Kingston.
Reports are that about 11:30 a.m., the senior citizen left a bank in downtown Kingston and was riding his bicycle home, when he was held up by two men travelling in a car.
Information reaching Loop News is that one of the men used a knife to cut out the pocket of the senior citizen and forcibly take the money.
“Early today me go to the bank to draw some money and was making my way back home when two men in a car drove up, almost hit me off my bicycle, and demanded that I give them my money,” the frightened senior citizen told Loop News.
“When I refused, one man from the car came out and used a knife to cut the money from my pocket,” the elderly man said.
The criminals then sped away, leaving the trembling victim on the side of the road.
In the interview, the distraught senior citizen said about 30 minutes before the attack, the two men in the car had tried to rob him when he was close to the Coronation Market. He said the men fled then after he raised an alarm.
“Earlier in the day just minutes after I left the bank, the same men stopped me while I was riding my bicycle pass Coronation market, and me bawl out ‘thief’ and people come down and them drive away,” the senior citizen told Loop News.
It appears that the men did not go far, and were still tracking their intended victim.
“It look like them follow me because as I reach on Spanish Town Road, they came back, held me up, and robbed me of all my money that I was going to use to get my glasses and to pay my utility bills,” the old man told Loop News.
He said after the attack, he walked up to one of the ZOSO checkpoints and told soldiers and police there of the developments.
He then went to the Denham Town Police Station to officially report the matter.
Police sources confirmed the report, and indicated that a search has been launched for the robbers.
Two weeks ago, similar concerns were raised by vendors who reported that at least two robberies took place in the downtown commercial district days after the ZOSO in Denham Town was announced.
In one of the reported attacks, a medical student was held up and robbed while walking along Beckford Street.
The student was making his way from the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) at the time of the attack.
A senior officer from the Denham Town station told Loop News that the student was robbed of an undetermined sum of cash.
Hours before that incident, Loop News received reports that armed men held up and robbed several vendors of goods and several other items along Oxford Street, close to the Coronation Market.
Following news of the robberies, residents in communities located to boundaries of the ZOSO raised concerns.
“Security in Denham Town but criminals are holding up people in nearby communities and we are calling on the authorities to also pay attention to these locations,” a vendor told Loop News.
