Eight in custody after AK-47 rifle, other gun recovered in St James

Eight persons were taken into custody following the recovery of two firearms, including an AK-47 rifle, during a major operation by a joint police/military team in St James on Sunday morning.

Reports are that the joint security force team went to a section of Anchovy where they carried out a raid and recovered the two illegal firearms and several rounds of assorted ammunition.

The eight community members who were held in connection with the seizure of the weapons are to be questioned in the presence of their attorneys.

The St James police are investigating.

Meanwhile,  the police say Sunday's operation was geared towards removing illegal firearms from the streets and apprehending gang members.
