Devon Moncrieffe gives Team Jamaica 3-1 lead in Contender Series
Team Jamaica's Devon Moncrieffe scored a fourth-round technical knockout victory over Tyler Wilson of Team Canada in Week 4 of Season 8 of the Wray and Nephew Contender Welterweight boxing series, at the Chinese Benevolent Association on Wednesday night.
Moncrieffe worked the body of Wilson for the duration of the fight, occasionally switching his attack to the head.
It was a third-round assault to the head that set up the victory, as Moncrieffe delivered six straight powerful right-hand shots, which hurt Wilson.
With Wilson wounded, Moncrieffe started the fourth and penultimate round of the five-round bout on the attack again. He caught the Canadian with another set of powerful shots, which eventually took its toll and send Wilson to his knees and although he got up during the standing eight count, the referee stopped the fight.
The end came 39 seconds into the fourth round.
According to Moncrieffe, who won the 2013 series, his preparation helped him to overcome Wilson's challenge.
Moncrieffe's victory pushed Team Jamaica to a 3-1 series lead.
The only victory for Team Canada came last week when Waseem ‘The Surgeon’ El Sinawi scored a technical knockout victory over Jamaica’s Ramel ‘Sub Zero’ Lewis.
The Canadian victory came after Richard ‘Frog’ Holmes and Nico Yeyo had put Jamaica 2-0 up in the eight-fight preliminary series.
Holmes scored a unanimous decision victory over Lloyd Reyes in the seaason opener on April 4 and Yeyo upset Canada’s number one seed Mayron Zeferino in a sensational 21-second bout on April 11.
Week 5 on May 2 features Jay Kelly of Team Canada against the talented Michael Gardener of Team Jamaica,
The winner of the series will take home a purse of $2 million. The second-place boxer will collect $500,000, third $250,000, and fourth $200,000.
