Member of Parliament for West Kingston, Desmond McKenzie has donated $500,000 to Luton Shelton in aid of the former national football player's fight against Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

McKenzie handed over a cheque to Shelton earlier this week, fulfilling a promise he made immediately after the shock announcement that the former Reggae Boy had been ailing with the dreaded condition - also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is rare neurological illness that affects the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement.

Handing over the funds, Minister McKenzie said he wishes Shelton, whose family hails from McKenzie's West Kingston constituency, "all the best and healing in Jesus name".

It's just the latest in an outpouring of support for Shelton, who represented Harbour View Football Club locally and a number of teams in Europe, including England's Sheffield United and Norwegian side Valarenga.

The sports ministry donated $5 million to help with Shelton's medical expenses, while Harbour View FC held a fundraiser last month.
