DaCosta, apprentice rider Roman dominate holiday racing card
Champion trainer Wayne DaCosta.
Champion trainer Wayne DaCosta and claiming apprentice, Raddesh Roman, dominated Thursday's Emancipation Day meet at Caymanas Park, teaming up to close the 10-race card with a double, which sealed individual three-timers for trainer and jockey.
DaCosta opened the programme with 1-9 favourite, two-year-old DEJAE'S BOY, and closed it with a double - SUMMER SUN and WINTER IS COMING, both ridden by Roman, who had earlier stunned punters in the sixth with 31-1 outsider, POWERFUL RED.
Meanwhile, lightweight ZEPHYR pulled off a 9-1 upset in the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission Trophy race, outbattling joint even-money favourite, ANOTHER VIGOROUS, to win by a head in the five-and-a-half furlong event.
Ridden by claiming apprentice, Reyan Lewis, ZEPHYR pressed Shane Ellis-ridden ANOTHER VIGOROUS, both chased by CHACE THE GREAT and RAS EMANUEL, eventually winning the stretch duel, which went down to the wire.
Ellis and Omar Walker rode two winners apiece. Walker moved to 47 wins, one behind Lewis, who stayed second in the standings, well adrift of fellow apprentice, Christopher Mamdeen, holding down the lead on 63.
Racing continues on Saturday, followed by another holiday meet, Tuesday's Independence Day card.
