Cruising to Haiti? Here are 7 things to do on its private isle Labadee
Most people know about the island of Haiti, but not many people are not aware that there is a smaller, private island and is a traveller's paradise.
Labadee is a small peninsula on the northern coast of Haiti. Leased by Royal Caribbean, you can only get there on a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the beaches and activities at Labadee are located within a 10-15 minute walk of your cruise ship.
If you're planning a cruise and Haiti is on the itinerary, here are seven cool things you should do when you touch down to the alluring and secluded private island of Labadee.
1. Arawak Aqua Park
Located in Columbus Cove, you can spend the day on floating trampolines, pyramids and water slides, and trampolines at Arawak Aqua Park. Guests can pop in and out of the park at will. Great for the kids (and the inner kid in all of us).
2. Dragon's Splash Waterslide
Located near the Aqua Park. Take a short journey into Columbus Cove's forest where a stone pathway meanders through the vegetation, and up to the head of the dragon. At the top, you'll slide down a 300-foot slide that drops you into an 18-foot splash zone.
3. Dragon’s Breath Zip Line
Thrillseekers rejoice. Named as the longest over-water zip line in the world, Dragon’s Breath Zip Line stands at 2,600 feet. Zipline over the ocean at speeds of 40 to 50 mph and get a breathtaking view of the tiny island.
4. Luc’s Splash Bash
If you're travelling with children, Luc’s Splash Bash is the perfect treat. The playground has a variety of water-based amenities from fountains to a “tree” of buckets that rotate, filling with water and dumping at random. On a hot day, it’s a welcome escape from the hot sand.
5. Dragon’s Tail Roller Coaster
This rollercoaster — yes, an actual roller coaster — curves through Labadee's rain forest, with spectacular views of the sea and the ship. Hop into one of the two-person carts for a five-minute ride through the jungle.
6. Lounge in luxury in a private cabana
If you are interested in having some extra privacy, or cushier accommodations in Labadee, then you should consider renting a cabana or beach bungalow. Each provides a secluded spot for you and your family/friends to enjoy. Guests can reserve a cabana or beach bungalow ahead of their cruise. They can also be rented once onboard the ship, but book fast since they tend to rent quickly.
7. Take the family to the DreamWorks photo safari excursion
If you're cruising with the family, this is a must-do when in Labadee. There are two excursions to choose from, both of which include a DreamWorks photo safari for the kids to enjoy.
