Cops say fatal Portland shooting was not politically motivated
The police say their preliminary investigations into the shooting death of a man and the injuring of two others at West Street, Port Antonio in Portland on Thursday, has indicated that the incident was not politically connected.
The deceased has been identified as Tevin McKenzie, a 24-year-old unemployed of Port Antonio.
Reports are that about 11:45 p.m., all three men were standing in front of a bar when they were approached by a gunman who opened fire, hitting them.
The victims were taken to hospital, where McKenzie was pronounced dead and the other men were admitted in stable conditions.
The shooting has triggered tensions in the parish where a by-election is slated to be held in a matter of days.
The police have, however, sought to assure residents that law enforcement authorities have put in place systems to clamp down on any further violent developments in the area.
In the meantime, the police are urging anyone who might have information that can assist in their investigations to contact 876-993-2546, Crime Stop at 311, the police 119 emergency number, or the nearest police station.
