Cops arrest man who stole bag from woman in Kingston

A man who grabbed a bag with items valued at over US $700  from a female in Kingston and told a judge that it was because he was hungry why he committed the illegal act, will know his fate when he returns to court on November 6.

The accused man, Courtney Mendez, pleaded guilty to larceny from the person when he appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Friday.

Police arrested Mendez after he grabbed a brown paper bag from a woman in the vicinity of a Corporate Area fast food store, and attempted to flee on foot.

The woman made an alarm and began to chase the thief. He was soon held by police officers who were on duty close by.

The court was told that the contents of the bag included a Samsung cellular phone, a purse, another cellular phone, among other items. The total value of the stolen goods was estimated at US$750.

The court was further told that Mendez, upon being arrested and cautioned, told the police that:

“Me no normally do (dem) thing yah, is hungry me (did) hungry”. He was remanded in custody by Senior Parish Judge, Vaughn Smith.
