A bus driver was shot dead after he attacked and chopped a police officer several times in Spanish Town, St Catherine on Wednesday.

Reports are that the driver was loading a Toyota Coaster bus illegally along Burke Road in the town when the policeman approached him and instructed that the bus should be moved to a designated area for public transportation.

Sources reported that an argument developed between the two and the uniformed policeman was attacked and chopped several times.

Police sources said one of the policeman's hands was “partially severed” from the attack.

The bus driver, 24-year-old Alex Needham, otherwise called ‘Lexi’, was shot by another policeman who saw what was happening and came to the rescue of his colleague.

The incident came less than a month after four police officers were shot - three fatally - in the same town and parish in an ambushed by criminals.

Reports are that a police team went to a home in Horizon Park, Spanish Town, Catherine about 5:am on Friday, June 12, and were ambushed, with four members of the team being shot multiple times.

They were rushed to a hospital, where Detective Corporal Dane Biggs and Constable Decardo Hylton were later pronounced dead.

A third officer, Superintendent Leon Clunis, who, along with a district constable, was admitted for treatment with multiple gunshot wounds, later succumbed to his injuries.
