Cop among four injured in dramatic chopping incident in St Mary
Three men, including a police corporal, received several wounds after they were attacked and chopped by another man, believed to be of unsound mind, in St Mary
The injured men were hospitalised, as was their alleged attacker, after he was shot by police personnel while being apprehended on Main Street in Port Maria on Saturday.
The Corporate Communications Unit of the police reported that from information received, at about 11am, a man believed to be mentally ill attacked a businessman and another mentally-challenged person, inflicting several chop wounds to their bodies.
The police corporal, who was close by, intervened and while seeking assistance for the injured persons to be taken to hospital, was also attacked and chopped multiple times.
The attacker then barricaded himself in a house, trapping an ailing, elderly man inside.
The police, who were alerted to the developments and had tracked the alleged attacker to the house, reportedly made several attempts to rescue the ailing man. During the rescue operation, the mentally-challenged man was said to have attacked the law enforcers, and was shot and injured.
The elderly man in the house was not harmed.
The police corporal, along with the other injured persons, remain in hospital, all reportedly in serious by stable conditions.
The police have since launched an investigation into the dramatic series of incidents.
