Preparatory works that will lead to the construction of a children’s hospital in Western Jamaica are set to be concluded by the third quarter of the financial year according to Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton.

The minister, who gave the update while making his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, said following extensive negotiations between the Government of Jamaica and the Government of China, an implementation agreement for the project was signed in November 2017.

He said the designs of the new hospital have since been completed.

The project entails the construction of the main hospital building which will be a 220-bed facility with a gross building size of approximately 16,000 square metres. It will also consist of staff quarters, a morgue and a mechanical/electrical building.

“I must highlight that this new children’s hospital will be the first and only public hospital not only in Jamaica but also in the wider Caribbean region that has dedicated adolescent health services. Apart from limited specialized adolescent services at the University Hospital of the West Indies, there is no specialized hospital in Jamaica that caters to the specific needs of these youth,” Tufton noted.

He said adolescents are currently treated either with children or among adults, which is not appropriate.

The Western Children’s hospital will provide clinical specializations in paediatric medicine, paediatric surgery, adolescent medicine, and adolescent surgery.

Currently, the only public facility dedicated to the treatment of children in Jamaica is the Bustamante Hospital for Children in Kingston.
