Concacaf Women’s Qualifying resumes in Jamaica on Saturday
Jamaica will host Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago and Antigua & Barbuda at the National Stadium in Kingston as the Concacaf Women's Championship Qualifying resumes on Saturday.
Nine teams from Central America and the Caribbean look to punch their ticket to the 2018 Concacaf Women's Championship.
The Concacaf Women´s Championship 2018 CWC will determine the three Concacaf teams to the Confederation that automatically qualify for next summer’s 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, while the fourth-place team will play a playoff against Argentina, third place finisher from Conmebol in a World Cup playoff.
If last May’s first round of Caribbean qualifying is any indication, fans can expect plenty of goalscoring fireworks in Jamaica.
Of note are the attacking forces of Cuba, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. The Cubans poured in 22 goals in the first round of qualifying, while the Reggae Girlz tallied 18, led by Khadija Shaw, who leads CWC Qualifying with eight goals.
Not to be outdone is Trinidad and Tobago, who scored a whopping 27 goals in qualifying, including 10-0 and 13-0 victories over the U.S. Virgin Islands and Grenada, respectively.
Two days after the start of the Caribbean Zone, the Central American teams will begin action. Two spots are up for grabs among the four teams: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Panama.
Costa Rica boast the most CWC experience with six appearances and a runner-up finish at the 2014 CWC, which earned the Ticas a ticket to its first ever FIFA WWC at Canada 2015.
Panama will be looking to recapture the glory of 2002 and 2006 when it qualified for its only CWCs, including a quarterfinal appearance in the latter.
Meanwhile, El Salvador and Nicaragua are both keen to qualify for their first CWC and have been hard at work preparing for next week’s matches in hopes of making history.
The Caribbean Zone will conclude Sunday, September 2, while the Central American Zone will wrap up on Friday, August 31.
