Champion trainer Wayne DaCosta on Saturday regained the lead in his heated title race with Anthony Nunes, bagging five winners on the 11-race card at Caymanas Park.
Starting the meet trailing Nunes by $127,700, DaCosta’s five-timer and a second-place finish moved him $1.47m clear of his rival, who could only manage one winner from nine starts, HOT ICE, in the 10th event.
DaCosta opened his tally with 1-9 favourite POKER STAR in the second event at five furlongs round for $250-210,000 claimers with Omar Walker aboard.
Though he failed in his bid to log consecutive winners when WINTER IS COMING was beaten into second place by DANOS LA PAZ at a mile, BULLET RAJ handed DaCosta his second victory, making all to beat $180,000 claimers at five furlongs straight with apprentice Tevin Foster in the fifth race.
The 17-time champion trainer won three of the last four races, SEREGEANT RECKLESS making all the running in race eight, section two of the Flossie McNeil Memorial with leading rider Anthony Thomas at six furlongs.
Walker won his second and DaCosta’s fourth astride RAMBUNCTIOUS LINKS, a comfortable winner in the ninth at six and a half furlongs. Nunes won the 10th with HOT ICE but DaCosta responded immediately with BRANDY, ridden by Thomas, beating MY SUPER GIRL in the 11th
Dane Nelson won three races on the card, opening the meet aboard FLY FIRST CLASS before landing the third with DANOS LA PAZ. Nelson closed his three-timer astride ENEDINA, making all at five and a half furlongs in the seventh.
