CARICOM Heads Meeting: Region to launch Single ICT space
Created : 5 July 2018
Dr Keith Mitchell
Grenada's Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell has announced plans by the Caribbean Community (Caricom) to establish a single ICT space which will be launched later this year.
“I must say at this juncture that CARICOM has indeed taken bold steps in developing the work plan for the CARICOM Single ICT space. In a few months, we will be launching a multi-stakeholder partnership to fast track specific elements of the Single ICP space,” Mitchell revealed.
“Our steps in fully implementing this must continue to be clear, even while we push the proverbial technological envelope, so to speak, in routing out and connecting other programmes and policies to transform the community,” said Dr Mitchell, who is also a former Caricom chairman.
Mitchell argued that technology impacts every aspect of lives, therefore heads of Caricom states must push Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and information and communication technology (ICT) at the heart of the desired goals in the region.
But, Mitchell argues that the recently implemented European General Data Protection Regulation is potentially a threat to several regional industries if measure are not implemented to address regulatory systems.
He was speaking at the opening session of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) Heads of Government 39th Regular Meetingat the Montego Bay Convention Centre.
