Cardenas leads Super Sparkle to victory over My Elle Belle

SUPER SPARKLE turned the tables on MY ELLE BELLE in a gate-to-wire victory at Caymanas Park on Saturday, closing a hat-trick of winners for Panamanian jockey Dick Cardenas.

The three-year-old bay filly, which won at odds of 2-1, beat MY ELLE BELLE, backed as the 3-5 favourite with leading rider apprentice Anthony Thomas, by two-and-a-half lengths.

Cardenas, a two-time champion jockey at Caymanas Park, opened his hat-trick astride Anthony Nunes' two-year-old debutant, BALTUSROL, and won his second in the stewards' room after 11-1 shot SMARTY TRADITION was awarded the sixth race.

Cardenas' hat-trick moved him to 43 winners, going past Shane Ellis (41) for second place in the jockeys' title race behind Thomas, who had a double on the 10-race card.

Thomas took his tally to 67 winners after opening the card with HOLOGRAM SHADOW and returning to score with 7-1 upsetter, STORM, for champion trainer Wayne DaCosta in the eighth.

Racing continues on Wednesday.
