Cabbie killed while sitting in car trunk; cop's heroics net suspects
Three men are to be questioned by police investigators in relation to a brazen and cold-blooded gun attack that left a taxi operator dead in Bailey's Vale, St Mary on Friday morning.
Amid the tragedy, the bravery and conviction of a police officer have taken centre-stage, after the cop’s on-the-spot intervention resulted in the detention of the three suspects.
The deceased has been identified as Damion Gardner.
The killing of the taxi driver, who plied the Bailey's Vale to Port Maria route, has brought the murder tally to 21 so far this year in the usually quiet rural parish.
This year's murder figure in the parish has now equalled last year's total homicide tally of 21.
It was reported that about 9:30 a.m., Gardner was sitting in the trunk of his Toyota Station Wagon motorcar, when another vehicle was driven up to the location.
A man alighted from the vehicle and opened fire at the taxi operator.
An off-duty policeman who was in the area, saw what was happening and pursued the assailants, who by then had sped in their vehicle.
The cop later found the getaway vehicle in a section of another community known as Trinity Land.
A further search led to the arrest of the three suspects.
The St Mary police are continuing their probe into the incident.
