The National Health Fund (NHF) is to build a cardiac ward at the Bustamante Hospital For Children, which is expected to be finished within a year.

Minister of Health, Dr Christopher Tufton, made the announcement while officially opening the Paediatric Cardiac Centre at the hospital on Monday morning.

According to Tufton, the new ward will cost $100 million, and will accommodate 20 beds.

The building is to be sited on 527 square metres (5668 square feet) of land, and be designed so that more space can be added on the top.

Designed by the NHF Projects Unit, the facility is to be linked to the existing buildings on the hospital compound through covered walkways.

Tufton said the proposed location will cause minimal disruption for staff, patients and visitors during construction, as the location will provide easy access for the workmen.

"We are serious about the health of our people, especially the generations to come, as reverberated by one of our national hero, Jamaica's first prime minister and whom this noble institution is named after, the Right Excellent Sir Alexander Bustamante," stated Tufton.
