August Town again on edge: another murder in the midst

Citizens living in August Town and surrounding communities in Eastern St Andrew are calling on the police to increase their presence in the area following reports that criminals have carried out yet another deadly attack in the area.

The latest incident took place on Wednesday when a 53-year-old man identified as Daniel ‘Brado’ Bryan was chased and gunned down.

His killing has brought to four the number of persons killed in the August Town area since the start of the year.

Reports are that about 10:30 a.m., Bryan was walking along a road in the community when gunmen carrying an M16 rifle attacked and shot him in the head.

The men then fled the area.

The attack has again left residents in the area on edge.

“We are calling on authorities to increase their presence in the area, as the killings have again left people on edge. We don’t know who will be next,” a woman from the area told Loop News during a telephone interview.

A male resident there shared the same view.

“The situation needs to be brought under control. The criminals are getting out of hand,” said the man who spoke on behalf of a group of individuals from the area.

Sources from August Town said the recent killing is believed to be linked to a flare-up of gang violence between members of a criminal outfit from Hermitage and another from Goldsmith Villa.

The August Town community, after celebrating the hard work and success of completing the calendar year 2016 without recording a single murder, saw the picture change significantly in 2017 and 2018, and a really bloody start to 2019, with three murders reported there on New Year’s Day, triggered a level of panic in the area back then, which is re-emerging.

For 2019, first there was the killing of 34-year-old Omar Johnson of Peyton Place in the community.

In what is believed to have been the first reported murder nationally for 2019, the construction worker was reportedly walking along a roadway at about 8:55 a.m., when he was attacked by men and seriously injured.

The police said Johnson was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

About 7:20 p.m. the same day, the bodies of two men were found with gunshot wounds on the August Town main road, the police reported.

Indications are that residents reported hearing gunfire in the area and the police were alerted.

A search was carried out on the August Town main road and the bodies of the two men were found.

The security forces have responded with a series of curfews being imposed on the community, and in two cases, murder charges have been laid against suspects in relation to murders in the area, including of Johnson on New Year's Day.
