A 25-year-old athlete was shot dead at his St Andrew home on Tuesday morning.

He has been identified as 400m runner, Kavon Nelson, of a McVille Terrace, Kingston 19 address.

Reports from the Corporate Communication Unit (CCU), the police information arm, are that about 12:30 am, Nelson was at his home when gunmen went to the premises and opened fire, hitting the athlete several times before making their escape.

Nelson was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A former student of Calabar High School, Nelson was a member of the Akan Track Club at the time of his death. His training partner, world championship medalist Javon Francis has been left grief-stricken over the incident.

“RIP to my best friend, otherwise my training partner,” Francis posted on his Facebook page Tuesday morning. “I never know this day would come. You are a brother to me and someone who love and care but I just want to say I love you from the bottom of my heart you will still be in my heart bro,” said Francis.

Nelson reportedly represented Jamaica at the NACAC Under 23 Championships in 2014
