Arnett fail to regain RSPL play-off spot, held 1-1 by Waterhouse

Arnett Gardens failed to regain a top-six spot in the 2019-2020 Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) after they were held to a 1-1 draw by leaders Waterhouse in the Monday night fixture, the final game of Match Day 29, at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.

Leading goal scorer Kemal Malcolm bagged his 13th goal of the season in the 24th minute to put Arnett Gardens 1-0 ahead, but Denardo Thomas responded with a 91st-minute equaliser to deny the "Junglists" all three points and a spot in the top six.

Both teams finished the match with 10 players as Oshane Roberts of Arnett Gardens and Stephen Williams of Waterhouse were ejected from the field by the referee in the 79th minute.

With just four regular-season games remaining, seventh-place Arnett Gardens moved to 42 points, one behind sixth-place Dunbeholden FC, which occupied the last playoff spot.

Last year's beaten finalists Waterhouse, which entered the round locked atop the standings with Mount Pleasant FA, moved to 54 points to become sole leaders. They are now a point ahead of Mount Pleasant FA, which suffered a 1-0 defeat against Cavalier at Drax Hall Sports Complex, St Ann's Bay on Sunday.

Reigning champions Portmore United (46 points), Humble Lion (46), Tivoli Gardens (43) and Dumbeholden FC (43) complete the top six.

At the end of the preliminary round,  the top two teams on points will advance straight to the semi-finals; while third to sixth place will enter into a playoff for the other two semi-final spots. The top team at the end of the preliminary round will also win $1 million. And the bottom two teams will be relegated.

The bottom two teams - UWI FC and Vere United FC are all but relegated following defeats on Sunday.

UWI FC were beaten 3-1 by visitors Portmore United at the UWI Bowl, while Vere United suffered a 5-1 defeat against Tivoli Gardens at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex on Sunday.

Both UWI FC and Vere United are locked on 18 points, 11 behind 10th-place Molynes United, which now look a safe bet to remain in the league despite a 2-0 defeat against Harbour View at the Waterhouse Stadium in Drewsland.
