Alleged gangster shot and killed in firefight with police in St James

An alleged gangster who was wanted for murder, was shot and killed during a confrontation with the police in St James on Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as 20-year-old Daniel Whittaker, also called Dan Dan of a Salt Spring address.

Reports are that about 3:50pm the police were on operation in the Bottom Melbourne, Glendevon area when they came under gunfire. The fire was returned.

During a subsequent search of the area Whittaker was found suffering from gunshot wounds.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A 9mm Smith and Wesson pistol was recovered from Whittaker, who was said to be a top tier member of the G-50 gang operating out of Salt Spring.

The Independent Commission of Investigation (INDECOM) has commenced their probe into the killing.
