A sum of $190 million is to be spent to construct a building to house the Portmore Municipal Corporation.

A contract for the construction was signed on Thursday, with the building set to go up on a property that is owned by the municipal corporation on Braeton Park Way in Gregory Park, St Catherine.

Speaking at the contract signing exercise, Desmond McKenzie, the Local Government and Community Development Minister, said the municipal corporation will provide $90 million for the project, with the ministry allocating the additional $100 million.

The construction is scheduled for  a period of 20 months, beginning on June 1 of this year, following ground-breaking on the site on May 30, the minister announced.

Since its existence, the Portmore Municipal Corporation has been operating from rented premises at Portmore Pines Plaza, where some logistical factors like security considerations and parking for its staff and customers, were always  challenging.
