1 killed, cop injured and firearm seized in gun battle downtown

A police constable attached to the Kingston Western Division was shot and injured during a confrontation with gunmen on Orange Street, downtown Kingston on Saturday, May 18.

The policeman’s alleged attacker was also fatally shot during the incident, and a 9mm pistol, along with four 9mm rounds of ammunition, was seized.

The deceased has been identified as Nicholas Henry, a 34-year-old resident of Devon Avenue, Kingston.

Reports are that the policeman was part of a team of law enforcers who attempted to accost the now deceased, who was seen along Orange Street acting in a manner that aroused their suspicions. Henry reportedly opened gunfire hitting the constable.

A gun battle ensued and the man was also shot, he was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The Inspectorate of Constabulary is investigating.

The Independent Commission of Investigation has been informed of the incident.
